International Prize: Community Resilience Hack

This category is about finding ways to help build resilience within our communities so they feel safe, connected and have the capacity to better adapt to changes. What are some of the shocks and stresses that individuals and communities might experience? · A natural disaster, such as flash flooding, a cyclone, earthquake or bushfire · High crime rates, such as frequent instances of property or car theft · Home and contents damage from a house fire or water leak · A car accident that might lead to injury and an insurance claim The Best Community Resilience Hack will be awarded to the hack that: · Best helps individuals, communities and governments understand what risks they face, and/or · Enhances either the social support networks in a community and/or the physical assets required to reduce vulnerability and limit the financial and emotional impact of an event.

 

Eligibility Criteria

all Australian and New Zealand teams are eligible. Must use at least two Official GovHack Datasets. Open Government data must be used.

Community Companion

Community Companion

The community companion device is for the elderly, the disabled and the infirmed.  It will make it easier to engage people and for them to not feel so isolated and lonely.  Elderly people feel disengaged, and this idea will help overcome these concerns, by delivering data technology to people who want to use it, but feel it is too hard.  It will use single-touch technology and voice output.  Android text-to-voice service will be used to speak the buttons as they are pressed.

Concept: To provide an improvement on the current rainfall map, provided by BOM, that is an easily interpreted visual representation of not only rainfall, but also the impact of the rainfall on the landscape, the potential of flooding and highlight any immediate threats to:

 

> Roads and bridges

> Walkways

> Businesses

> Residential areas

The system will not only display present coverage, but also utulising predictive modelling, will give an approximate indication of future coverage, and alert residents and businesses to any immediate or future threat or impedance.
