PokeDrive is a revolutionary and innovative mobile app designed to allow you, the Pokemon GO Trainer, to catch Pokemon extremely easily and efficiently while driving in a car.

You’ll only need to look at your phone for minimal lengths of time so that even while driving, you’ll be able to become the very best!

If you’ve watched the video, you will now know that our weekend project was a real native android app but NOT one for playing Pokemon GO with.

The idea was inspired by a friend who was recently involved in a car accident due to Pokemon GO and driving. Luckily the accident was very minor, but along with all the other crazy accidents happening the past month due to Pokemon GO. Knowing the social effectiveness of storytelling over just stating raw facts, we felt that GovHack was the perfect opportunity to remind everyone about driving safety through an engaging story.

Why Pokemon GO?

  • Everyone is crazy about this game at the moment, so we believed it would help make the app more enticing giving it more potential to go viral.

  • 60% of Pokemon GO players are under 24, which coincidentally is also the age of ‘high risk’ young drivers. This was ideal as our message is mainly targeted at youth and new drivers.

  • The game is ‘light and fun’ which made for a perfect segue into the actual ‘dark and serious’ message in our app, making the twist a bit more shocking.

We used a plethora of data to help convey our story; From NZ Transport, Ministry of Transport, MetService, Statistics NZ, NZ Police, even data about Pokemon GO itself. (Please refer to datasets used for more detailed description of use)

The data was also used to provide a personalised story and statistics to the unsuspecting user, based on the questions they were asked initially.

We hope that our project will make everyone think twice the next time they feel their phone buzzing from Pokemon GO while they drive. Besides, it’s probably just a zubat anyway :) ​​​​​​​​​​​​​​

Statistics in this report was used in the app as reference for personalisation in the story if the user stated that they were 'young' A lot of the information is also laid out at the end of the app to further inform users about the dangers of driving when young. e.g. More than 10% of young driver's accidents are caused by attention diversion.

The tools from this website were used to determine how many people from the user's demographic caused traffic related incidents this month. We use the information about the user they enter in the app along with this tool to determine the results.

This data set had statistics in relation to mobile phone offences while driving. We used the mind-blowing number of offences and fines in 2015 to help emphasise the seriousness of the issue of using your phone while driving.

This analysis of the Pokemon GO user base showed us the distribution of the game between males and females, as well as the age range. It was important to us that 60% of the user base was below the age of 24 as that is what categorises a 'young' and 'high risk' driver.
