Grave Diggers

The Wilderpeople are really excited to share with New Zealand a new application game we’ve developed. We’ve called it Gravediggers. You see, we’ve been internalising a really complicated situation in our heads because making the right choices can be really hard in the face of so much information. Turning this into a game is our complicated situation solution- Gravediggers is our portal for you to understand how health risks affect you. There’s an overwhelming amount of statistics out there and they all sound ominous, and are complex and hard to understand – X% of cancer is caused by drinking or Y% of cardiovascular disease is caused by smoking. But, these things often haven’t happened yet and it’s hard to know how to make the choice now. So, we’ve translated this information into relating the decisions you make in everyday life to its impact on your life expectancy. Every choice you make adds or subtracts years from your life – and our game helps you understand exactly how your everyday decisions change the length of your life.

At the start of the game you give the app some really basic information – your gender and your age. Then, we take you through a day in the life of your game “character”. Just like in real life, at different times of the day there are different choices to make. What time to get up, what to wear, what to eat, whether or not to have a cigarette. As you go through the game, you make decisions, with the app then showing video content related to your choice. We leverage some of the great public service content that the NZ government has already invested in – everyone knows ghost chips – as well as give some facts about each of the risk factors – and some great Kiwi humour. At the end of the day, you see a dashboard that shows you cumulative years of life lost for each decision and more information about risk factors associated with the choices – something you can learn from and compare with friends.

So, our intention is that the high quality information made available from government sources is even more accessible for the everyday user. We hope that people who play our Gravediggers game come away more educated about the choices they make and the long term impact of these decisions – our users might just decide that today is the day for No More Beersies.
