Bringing together multiple local data source to improve the experience of finding suitable parking for Ballarat residents and visitors in the form of an app.

The app will provide information about:

  • Safer places to park (CCTV and lighting locations)
  • Parking infringement hot spots
  • Probability of parking availability (according to historical parking occupancy data)

The concept also encompasses the potential for incorporating weather data to assist with parking location choices and combining tree location data with the position of the sun to inform drivers of shady areas to park in hotter weather.

How did you use this data in your entry?: 
This data was used to obtain location data for traffic infringements in order to create a heat map over the Ballarat streets indicating areas where more parking fines are incurred. This kind of visualisation can be useful in alerting users to no parking zones and assisting them to choose parking spaces more appropriate to their length of stay by alerting and thus avoid incurring fines.

How did you use this data in your entry?: 
We used this data to identify parking locations that suit the user's needs, whether or not they are paid and the type of park available such as disabled, taxi and loading zones. This would make visiting Ballarat destinations a more pleasurable experience for those with special accessibility needs and enable commercial drivers to work more efficiently. As a side effect, this may potentially improve traffic flow around the CBD area as drivers would easily be able to identify and drive directly to an appropriate parking space, instead of taking unnecessary route in search of a specific type of park.

How did you use this data in your entry?: 
This data indicates the percentage of parking spaces being used at various times of the day for different parking areas. This can be used to provide functionality within our app that provides the user with an estimated probability of finding a park in a given area for a certain time of day. This could also be used to make recommendations for the best parking area closest to the users selected destination. Reducing the time it takes to find a convenient parking space has the potential to not only improve the experience of visitors or cummuters to to Ballarat's CBD area, it may also enhance Ballarat's reputation as great place to work and live.

How did you use this data in your entry?: 
This was used within the app to display CCTV camera locations on the map, indicating safer places to park and safer walking passages from a car park to the user's destination. This improves safety for the user and their personal property because areas under surveillance are less likely to be targeted for crimes and in the event that a crime does occur the user has peace of mind that evidence will be available for criminal investigations that may lead to property recovery or justice against the perpetrator.

How did you use this data in your entry?: 
Public lighting locations were mapped to indicate well lit places to park and safer walking routes after dark from the car park to the user's destination. Well lit areas can provide greater personal safety and property security by way of both discouraging criminal activity and providing greater visibility of dangers such as tripping hazards and obstacles on the road.

This data enables the development of a parking recommendation system based on weather conditions. For example, this could be combined with information about undercover parking or proximity from undercover pathways between the car park and the user's destination on rainy days, or with information about tree locations and sun position to recommend shaded parking in hot weather or more dangerous zones during severe winds and storms. This has the potential to improve the user's physical comfort as well as reducing the risk to their personal safety or damage to their personal property in extreme weather conditions.

How did you use this data in your entry?: 
Location data about trees, combined with the position of the sun and weather conditions, provides an opportunity to incorporate into the app recommendations for shaded parking or shaded pathways between the parking space and the user's destination in hot weather. Combined with weather warning data, this data could also be used to recommend parking locations to avoid during periods of strong wind warnings and storm conditions. This, along with, species data about trees, may enable a heat map visualisation indicating a danger rating for different parking areas based on a combination of both tree density in parking areas and the likelihood of falling branches according to species types. This has the potential to improve the user's physical comfort as well as reducing the risk to their personal safety or damage to their personal property in extreme weather conditions.
