Crafting Wellington

Wellington in Minecraft: Crafting Wellington with MineWelly
Team Name:
MineWelly

Inspired by the topological Minecraft data released by the Wellington Council we explored how features can be crowd sourced and represented in Minecraft  - we also looked at how data such as MetService real-time weather could be used dynamically within Minecraft, and a variety of other open data sources that can shape a 'real-world' Minecraft build

Used Datasets:
Dataset Name:
MetService GovHack Live Weather API
Publishing Organisation/Agency:
MetService
Jurisdiction of Data:
Local Government
How did you use this data in your entry?:
Using the MetService feed of observations, we added in a JSON script generator to look at the recent rainfall values and translate into a Minecraft command - for example in the api/obs if threeHour.rainfall == 0.0 we get the command: /weather clear 360 and when rainfall is > 0.0 we issue a /weather rain 360. Sample data was like {"threeHour": {"rainfall": "0.0", ..}

How did you use this data in your entry?:
Using a JSON call we looking in the forecast text and forecastWord for 'thunder' and if found we issue a we issue a /weather thunder 360 During the GovHack weekend we didn't see any thunder - so were not sure if this was going to work. Example was "forecast": "Few showers, to rain afternoon. Strong NW, late S'ly.", "issuedAt": "10:27am 30 Jul", "forecastWord": "Showers" or "forecast": "Rain, clears this evening. Northwest rises to gale.", "issuedAt": "4:39pm 30 Jul", "forecastWord": "Windy"

Urban Contours 1m Interval

How did you use this data in your entry?:
We looked at how the 1m contour data closely matches to the resolution of Minecraft landscapes and can be used to generate worlds
Dataset Name:
Minecraft topo map of Wellington
Publishing Organisation/Agency:
Wellington City Council
Jurisdiction of Data:
Local Government
How did you use this data in your entry?:
We loaded up this map and used the 'lumps' of buildings to start forming interiors of some - in particular we looked at the MBIE building where the Wellington GovHack was being held
Dataset Name:
WCC Buildings

How did you use this data in your entry?:
This set was useful as it showed the building footprints to trace for creating buildings in Minecraft - for example - https://github.com/JoMangee/lilblip-games/blob/master/minecraftWorlds/CraftWellyMBIE/pics/MBIE-building-WCC.jpg full URL of interest was http://data.wcc.opendata.arcgis.com/datasets/a47c22060000454799755355aaa98756_15.geojson?where=&geometry={"xmin":19455727.960003174,"ymin":-5054027.628980989,"xmax":19456600.417021453,"ymax":-5053848.47969592,"spatialReference":{"wkid":102100,"latestWkid":3857}}
